Dr. Kevin Autry - Assistant Professor, Psychology

Dr. Autry is currently focusing on two areas.

Mental Representation of Time- "People understand time by thinking about it spatially. For example, native-English speakers tend to think about the past on the left and the future on the right. However, experience with languages read in the opposite direction (e.g., Arabic, Hebrew) causes people to form a reversed representation of time with the past on the right and the future on the left. I am currently developing several studies to explore these representations, their origins, and their flexibility, using both children and adults."

Misinformation- "Inaccurate information abounds in our modern society. One of the challenges we face is trying to correct misinformation which can often be harmful (e.g., vaccines cause autism). I am currently developing a series of studies to explore the role that negation plays in the correction of misinformation. Specifically, I intend to examine the effectiveness of refutation (e.g., vaccines do not cause autism) when people are aware of the original misinformation compared to when they have not been exposed to the misinformation, with the goal of determining when an attempted correction may inadvertently reinforce the misinformation."

Dr. Autry is not accepting new Research Assistants until Fall 2018
